Jackson Widens IT Recruiting Pipeline with New Office at Michigan Tech

New “SmartZone” satellite office allows Jackson to train, develop and evaluate programming student-workers for full-time positions

March 7, 2013 (Lansing, Mich.)Jackson National Life Insurance Company® (Jackson®), a leading provider of retirement solutions, has launched another creative way to increase its pipeline of information technology (IT) talent – bringing the company to the top student candidates. Jackson held a ribbon cutting Wednesday, March 6, for its new office just blocks away from the Michigan Technological University (MTU) campus in Houghton, Mich., which will offer employment to more than a dozen students.

The new office was opened as an extension to Jackson’s successful summer internship program. Each summer high-potential college students from across the United States come to work on key technology projects at Jackson’s Lansing, Mich. headquarters, said Mark Clark, chief information officer for Jackson. In recent years, many of Jackson’s IT interns have come from MTU, and several have stayed with the company in full-time positions.

“We have been so impressed with our Michigan Tech summer interns that we’ve hired many on after graduation,” said Clark. “The new SmartZone office will help promote Jackson on campus and give us a better opportunity to attract top talent.”

The Houghton satellite office also gives Jackson a better opportunity to engage with university faculty, staff and students. Rob Sweet, Jackson director of systems and programming, is the manager of the Houghton office and an MTU alumnus. He recently moved back to the area with his family to oversee the office and become more involved on campus. Sweet said one of his priorities is to become an active member of the MTU computer science and computer engineering communities. While the company already has a strong relationship with MTU’s career services staff, Sweet now aims to strengthen current relationships and build new ones as a Jackson ambassador on-campus.

“By operating our MTEC SmartZone office year-round at Michigan Tech, we are able to demonstrate first-hand the sophistication and cutting-edge technology of Jackson’s IT department,” said Sweet. “The SmartZone will help us show students that a job in the financial services industry could be a great career choice.”

The office currently employs 12 part-time students and one full-time junior associate in addition to Sweet. The company hopes to employ 30 students in the SmartZone office by the end of 2013.

Jackson’s intern model is a proven method to identify students who may be good candidates for full-time employment, while also giving students real-world experience to help them in the future, Sweet said. The students work on actual company projects along with Jackson IT staff in the Lansing and Nashville offices focusing mostly on Java projects, research and proof of concept, conversions, optimizations and mobile development.

“By working with Michigan Tech students for one to two years prior to their graduation, we are able to increase our pipeline of new hires and spend more time with the students individually, to identify those we believe will be a good fit,” Sweet said.
